Hail the Trail

Hail the Trail participants will positively impact the environment and give back to the W&OD Trail by helping our beneficiary, the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, to beautify the trail.

This collective action will result in the largest cleanup effort in the trail’s history and will garner strong charitable, community and civic benefits for the residents and businesses of the area. Groups of participants are welcome, as well as individuals looking to give back to the community.

Participants will have the option of working at various locations along the trail where they will help to pick up trash, weed, plant, maintain kiosks, and more.

Hail the Trail will take place at ten locations along the trail, each labeled as a "station" along the old railroad. Participants are able to choose from the following stations:

Hail the Trail Announcement Regarding Herndon Station and Wiehle Station

Dominion Virginia Power adopted the Herndon Station and Wiehle Station in support of Hail the Trail. We have postponed the volunteer work at these two locations until their employees return from storm restoration duties in central and western Virginia.

1. Goose Creek Station (Town of Leesburg)

Tasks: Paint and sand kiosks and tables, fix cracked benches, cut back overgrowth

Address: Cochran Mill Rd. at Washington and Old Dominion Trail

 Street parking is available around 42034 Cochran Mill Rd.

2. Buchanan Station (Loudoun County)

Tasks: Tree and garden planting

Cross Streets: S. Sterling Blvd. & E. Williamsburg Rd.

 Parking is available at Sterling Automotive located at 22510 S. Sterling Ave.

3. Bready Park Station (Town of Herndon)

Tasks: Tree and garden planting

Cross Streets: Ferndale Ave & Barton Oaks Place

Parking is available at Herdon Parks and Rec located at 814 Ferndale Ave 

4. Sunrise-Sunset Station (Reston)

Tasks: Replacement of boards in picnic table

Work takes place at: Robert Fulton Dr. & Sunrise Valley Dr.

Parking is available in the back lot of the Sunrise Oak Professional Park Condos located at 1801 Robert Fulton Dr.

 

 

5. Park Station (Town of Vienna)

Tasks: Trash removal and invastive species removal

Address: 120 Cherry St. SE

Parking is available at the Town of Vienna Community Center located at 120 Cherry St. SE

6. Gallows Station (Dunn Loring - Fairfax County)

Tasks: Vegetation trimming and removal

Cross Streets: Gallows Rd. & Iliff Dr.

 Parking is available at the Community Church of God located at 2500 Gallows Rd.

7. Rolling Road Station (City of Falls Church)

Tasks: Landscaping, new bench, kudzu removal

Address: 507 Little Falls St.

Parking is available at Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge #64, please do not park in the front ten spots that are allocated for AAA

8. Bluemont Station (Arlington County)

Tasks: Invasive species removal, painting of bridge and trimming vegetation

Across: 601 N. Manchester St.

Parking is available in the park lot located at 601 Manchester St.

Hail the Trail will take place from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, October 20, 2012. Participation in Hail the Trail is free and participants will receive a free Trail Mix t-shirt for their contribution to the W&OD Trail!
