Trailfest, a community festival to celebrate the W&OD Trail, will be held at Farmwell Station Middle School, located at 44281 Gloucester Parkway, Ashburn, Virginia 20147. Trailfest will take place from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2012, and will be the culminating event of Dominion Trail Mix.
The Farmwell Station Middle School site used to be a train station along the Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire Railroad, which arrived in Farmwell in 1860. Farmwell Station was one of the many rail stops along the railroad, which served agrarian Loudoun County. Loudoun country was home to more than 1,200 farms at that time, and the railroad was used to transport cash crops of wheat, corn, and oats, as well as livestock and dairy products. The town where the station was located was also called Farmwell until 1896 when the name was changed to Ashburn after an ash tree in the town supposedly burned continuously for a week.
The railroad and its many stations were later amalgamated to form what is now known as the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. Today, the historic Farmwell Station is home to Farmwell Station Middle School and the W & OD Trail is one of the most used community resources for outdoor activity in Northern Virginia.
